Yacyreta' hydroelectric project
The main works of the Yacyretá project are located on the Paraná River, some 80 km downstream from the cities of Encarnación and Posadas. The dam extends from the Argentinean bank of the Paraná and crosses the navigable stretch of the river downstream from the Apipé rapids, continuing along Yacyretá Island for 18.7 km. After crossing the Aña-Cuá stretch, the dam extends along the Paraguayan bank, parallel to the river, to the town of San Cosme y Damián. The dam reservoir has a surface area of 1,600 km², with a total volume of water of 21 billion m³.
The main concrete structure is 270 m long and 27 m wide, enabling vessels with a maximum draft of 3.65 m to clear the river level difference of 23.60 m.
The open-air powerhouse houses twenty 160 MW capacity Kaplan turbines, providing total installed generating capacity of 3,200 MW. The powerhouse is 808 m long, 70 m high, with a maximum discharge capacity of 16,000 m³/s.
The project features two spillways:
the spillway on the main river stretch, adjacent to the powerhouse, has a discharge capacity of 55,000 m³/s, through 18 radial gates 15 m wide and 19.5 m high;
the spillway on the Aña-Cuá stretch, has a discharge capacity of 40,000 m³/s, through 16 radial gates 15 m wide and 15.50 m high.
The different dam sections are:
Left lateral dam (12 km long)
Main left dam (1.8 km long)
Main stretch closing dam (1.9 km long)
Yacyretá Island dam (18.7 km long)
Aña-Cuá stretch closing dam (3.6 km long)
Right lateral dam (25.7 km long)
The overall length of the various dams is 63.7 km for a total embankment volume of 62,000,000 m³.
Live fish facilities
Two structures have been built at both ends of the powerhouse to assist the transfer of fish, which are attracted by a special water current and led into a pool. The fish are then lifted out of the pool and released into the reservoir, using two 15 m³ metal transfer tanks,. Approximately 1,800 kg of fish can be transferred at a time.
